I am a fourth-year History and Communications student at 69热视频. My passion for both storytelling and environmental conservation led me to seek out opportunities that would allow me to blend these interests seamlessly. As an aspiring journalist, I have always believed in the power of media to drive positive change and raise awareness about pressing global issues. Nowhere more did I see this than at the 69热视频 Tribune, where I acted as a Staff Producer and later was on the editorial board, serving as Multimedia Editor. My decision to pursue an internship at The New Lede, an environmental news outlet, was driven by my desire to gain hands-on experience in the field of investigative journalism. I aimed to develop my skills in researching, reporting, and visual storytelling while making a meaningful contribution to environmental awareness, especially stories concerning pesticides, a certain interest of mine. My learning objectives included honing my ability to effectively communicate complex environmental issues, and engage a diverse audience.
The New Lede is a respected environmental news outlet known for its collaborations with outlets such as The Guardian and Circle of Blue. With a mission to bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding, the organization aims to empower individuals with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about environmental conservation and sustainability. As an intern at The New Lede, I was entrusted with a range of responsibilities that allowed me to immerse myself in the world of environmental journalism. My tasks included researching, conducting interviews with experts and stakeholders, writing engaging articles, and assisting in the production of multimedia content.
One of the most exciting opportunities I received was the chance to travel to Mead, Nebraska, to create a short documentary that delved into the complex issue of pesticides and their impact on the environment. The Mead, Nebraska documentary project was undoubtedly a highlight of my internship experience and by far the most time-consuming element. Through extensive research and on-site interviews, I was able to capture compelling narratives that showcased the real-life consequences of pesticide use on local ecosystems, agriculture, and community health. I learned the art of visual storytelling and witnessed firsthand the transformative power of combining powerful visuals with informative narratives. While the internship was incredibly fulfilling, it also presented its share of challenges. During the Mead documentary project, I encountered difficulties in gaining access to certain key sources due to concerns about backlash from the agricultural community. To overcome this obstacle, I employed a combination of persistence, diplomacy, and ethical consideration. By emphasizing the importance of presenting a balanced narrative and respecting diverse perspectives, I managed to secure the necessary interviews and ensure the documentary's integrity.
This internship has had a profound impact on my university experience. It has provided me with a real-world understanding of the challenges and responsibilities that come with being an environmental journalist. By engaging with pressing environmental issues and collaborating with experts in the field, I have developed a deeper appreciation for the role media plays in influencing public opinion and policy decisions. The internship has not only enriched my academic journey but has also solidified my commitment to using journalism as a tool for positive change.

The firsthand interactions and experiences I gained during my travels brought the subject of my documentary to life in a way that books and articles simply couldn't capture. Through this internship, I honed my investigative journalism skills and developed a deeper understanding of the complexities inherent in the world of agriculture. I am truly grateful for the opportunity she has provided, and I will carry the invaluable lessons and memories from this internship with me throughout my life and career.
