Palliative care: Shedding light on euthanasia

Award-winning researcher Kathleen M. Foley, MD, to present the 13th Annual Sandra Goldberg Lecture

The ethics of euthanasia continue to be debated in Parliament, the National Assembly, in the media and around dinner tables everywhere. It is one of the most difficult issues with which a society must deal. Who better to shed light on this difficult question than one who has dedicated her career to transforming the culture of dying - through research, pioneering treatment and care for patients with life-limiting and terminal illnesses?

Dr. Foley has received numerous awards and honours for her work and is a member of more than 30 medical and scientific societies, including the Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the American Society of Clinical Oncology Panel on Cancer Care at the End of Life.

As an expert consultant to the World Health Organization's Cancer and Palliative Care Unit and as past director of a WHO Collaborating Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Foley chaired three expert committees resulting in the publication of three WHO Monographs: Cancer Pain Relief (1986), Cancer Pain Relief and Palliative Care (1990) and Cancer Pain and Palliative Care in Children (1996).

The Sandra Goldberg Lecture will be presented in English and simultaneous French translation will be available.
