Dancing with Paintings: Du Fu’s (712-770) Art of Wonder

Thursday, October 20, 2022 16:30to18:00

Du Fu’s poetry has long been lauded for its brilliant blends of technical innovation and subtle, personal expression, as he created new poetic subgenres and set many traditional subgenres poetry on new pathways, forever broadening the range and impact of Chinese lyric poetry. One such subgenre, perhaps the most striking of all, is that of “poetry on painting” or tihuashi, in which he is thought to have been nothing less than a pioneer. This talk will offer in-depth readings of a selection of these poems in order to explore the precise nature of his ingenuity, with particular attention to the experience of wonder, and the dynamic role it plays in Du Fu’s construction of lyric subjectivity.
