SYNOPSIS: Adherence to both ART and second-line TB medicines is essential to achieving successful outcomes in patients coinfected with HIV and extensively drug-resistant TB. Findings from a prospective study in 2009- 2011, in KwaZulu-Natal South Africa, found patients to be significantly more adherent to ART compared to TB medicines. In 2012-13, we investigated the reasons underlying this difference using qualitative methods. An exploratory approach allowed us to capture critical, poorly addressed barriers to adherence in the context of the South African twin epidemics.聽
