While in prison, Duncan worked as inmate legal counsel for twenty-three years. Shortly after he was released, he was hired as a paralegal with the Louisiana Capital Appeals Project. In 2012, Duncan was awarded the Soros Justice Fellowship to vindicate the post-conviction rights of incarcerated people by increasing their access to the courts, and by raising awareness around the inequities in the post-conviction process.
