CJAD - Online gambling hot among teen males

Published: 9 June 2011

A new study, led by 69ÈÈÊÓƵ's Jeffrey Derevensky, illustrates how young men, particularly, have taken to gambling online. According to Derevensky's study, a little over 6 percent of males aged 14 to 17 say they engaged in online gaming last year. And he says that figure is doubling every couple of years.

Derevensky fears many parents are oblivious to the phenomenon, and urges them to discuss online gambling with their teens.  He warns that watching their online habits may not be enough, and that they should also keep an eye on any credit card accounts their teenaged children might have. Derevensky says smartphones now make it easier than ever for youths to play the odds.
