Know yourself: This is what prevents you from falling into stream-of-consciousness mode when asked, 鈥渟o鈥� tell me about yourself.鈥� Nobody wants to know where you grew up and nobody鈥檚 interested in where you graduated from鈥攖hey already gleaned those details from your resum茅. That approach is akin to trying to sell a vacuum cleaner by reading the instruction manual out loud.聽Instead, talk about what makes you different from the tens, if not hundreds, of other qualified recent grads.
The secret here is the old literary adage, 鈥渟how, don鈥檛 tell.鈥� For example, telling your interviewers that you are 鈥渧ery organized,鈥� says Blachford, will only elicit a vacant stare. Instead, offer an achievement: 鈥淲hen I was president of the economics club, I cut costs by reorganizing the archives.鈥�
