The 69ÈÈÊÓƵ Adult Respirology Residency Program is responsible for the training of subspecialists in adult respirology medicine. The program is approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as the Collège des médecins du Québec, and accepts residents from Quebec, the rest of Canada and around the world. Trainees must be accepted by, and registered at 69ÈÈÊÓƵ through the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education; they must first complete three years of core training in internal medicine.

To help meet the needs of trainees, the program has two major streams:

1. Core Adult Respirology Medicine
2. Respiratory Medicine Clinician/Scientist

NOTE:Ìý ÌýThe combined 3-year training program in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine is no longer available in Canada. Each of these disciplines now requires a separate two-year training program.Ìý Residents interested in training in critical care medicine at 69ÈÈÊÓƵ should contact the Critical Care residency program director.

Core Adult Respirology Medicine

In this stream, trainees spend 18 months in clinical training, including pulmonary consultation and inpatient services, pulmonary and non-pulmonary intensive care units, specialty ambulatory care training (asthma, COPD/rehabilitation, tuberculosis, pulmonary vascular disease, cystic fibrosis, etc.), sleep medicine, pulmonary oncology, pulmonary radiology, pulmonary pathology, and pulmonary physiology (including pulmonary function testing and exercise testing). There is extensive exposure to bronchoscopic and pleural procedures.

Core clinical training sites include MUHC Montreal Chest Institute/Montreal General Hospital, and Jewish General Hospital.

An additional 6 consecutive months are devoted to supervised clinical or basic science research, in collaboration with the Meakins-Christie Laboratories and the Respiratory Epidemiology and Clinical Care Unit.

Respiratory Medicine Clinician/Scientist

This stream is suited to individuals aiming for careers as independent investigators. The clinical training is the same as for the standard core adult respirology medicine stream, and includes 6 months of research during the first two years. In addition, there is a fully funded third year in research, designed to provide trainees with further research training – in basic science (laboratory) or clinical-epidemiologic research methods.

Electives

A variety of elective rotations are possible and special electives can be arranged to meet the specific needs of individual trainees. Some of the currently available electives include:

• lung transplantation (in conjunction with the Université de Montréal)
• pulmonary oncology
• pediatric respirology
• occupational respiratory disease
